Raaslila means ‘Dance of Devine love’ is part of the mythical story of Hindu God Krishna, when he danced with Radha and her friends. The Rash Lila took place one night when the Gopies of Vrindavan, heard the sound of Krisna’s flute, sneaked away from their families to the forest to dance with Krishna throughout the night, which Krisna supernaturally stretched the night to the length of several billion of years. Krishna was a six years old boy when the Rash Lila happened.
Rash festival is celebrated in all different parts of Bangladesh, among which the festival of the Manipuri indigenous community is very special and unique.
They perform a folk dance drama based on the scenes from Rash Lila. Solo and group dancing are combined with singing, chanted recitation, and instrumental accompaniment. They wear very colorful traditional tribal cloths during the performance. The drama is played the whole night starting from midnight during the full moon in November. Children dressed as Lord Krishna and dances at mid-day of previous day for several hours too. Village traditional markets are organized during the day where people come from far away.
